Osteopathy aims to work with the body and improve its own natural abilities in regulating and healing itself. The practice focuses on treating the causes of pain and imbalance in order to bring normal physiological function back into the body.

Treatment is based on the body’s ability to normally circulate all of its fluids, including the blood, lymph, synovial fluid, digestive juices, cerebrospinal fluid, etc. Proper flow of these fluids is required to maintain the effects of the suspended biological compounds and to excrete waste or byproducts. Processes that may affect this flow may include aging, trauma, illnesses, scarring, childbirth, and mental, emotional or physical stresses. Additionally, misaligned bones, organs or tissues may act as obstructions that prevent proper circulation of these fluids. Since the body gradually loses its efficiency in self-healing over time, the effects of these obstructions accumulate. This may lead to tissue congestion, dehydration, scarring, stiffness, and changes in density, motility, temperature, moisture or texture. Affected areas of the body that are not circulating properly or are restricted may include musculoskeletal, respiratory, cardiovascular, digestive, reproductive and nervous systems. Osteopathic Manual Practitioners are able to detect the subtle impediments by assessing the quality, position and mobility of the tissues. Several techniques are used based on manual assessment, which is used to feel or sense the tissue state. Treatment involves gentle and manual easing of the restricted flow in the tissues. Most importantly, nothing is added or removed from the body. Rather, the treatment works with the body to promote restoration.

People of all ages and backgrounds who seek relief of pain, injury or improvement of other health concerns can benefit from osteopathic treatment. Benefits of the treatment may include pain and tension relief, reduced swelling and stiffness, improved circulation, increased range of motion, or improved tissue mobility. Although treatment may be focused on particular areas, the healing effects are often extended throughout the whole body.
